In 1961, land was purchased by the Rocky Mountain District of Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod. A building was constructed and the first service was held by Rev. Omar Stuenkel on July 9. The congregation was officially dedicated on October 1, 1961. Gethsemane was received officially as a member of the LCMS in 1964.
The district had envisioned a Christian Day School would be started along with the church. A pre-school and kindergarten were started in August of 1962. The congregation continued to grow and construction of a 50 foot addition on the north end of the building was completed in 1965.
Seeing the need for more room to worship, a new sanctuary was attached to the east end of the school. Construction was completed within a year with most of the work being done by the members. It was dedicated on Palm Sunday, 1971.
Renovations began on the older building and a second floor was completed. The school expanded by adding a grade level each year beginning in 1976, using the newly constructed classrooms. Through the 90s the school grew and some years, Gethsemane found it necessary to use the church basement to house a few grades. More expansion plans were carried out and the classroom and office space was added by renovation of the west building in 2004. During this project an elevator was added along with air conditioning.
School enrollment declined during the second decade of the 21st century and with sad hearts Gethsemane closed the grade school in 2019. The preschool continued until closing in May of 2021. At the present time most of the classrooms are being used by community organizations such as Head Start and Orphan Grain Train. God continues to bless the efforts of His people planted at the corner of Washington and Garland in Northglenn.
